2009 Calgary Choice Awards

The inaugural 2009 Calgary Choice Awards celebrated the best in Calgary with more than 350 guests. The gala was hosted by none other than Calgary’s own Phoenix from Mix 97.7 Calgary FM. With more than 2,500 votes cast for 150 nominated companies, the competition was fierce. A number of Calgary organizations came away as winners.

The media was in full force with coverage received from Shaw TV, the Calgary Sun, Global TV, 97.7 Calgary FM and Metro News. Some of the local celebrities in attendance included Global TV’s Leslie Horton, Calgary Sun’s Bill Brooks, Avenue Magazine’s Rob Mabee, Olympic Gold Medalist Mark Tewksbury and Alderman Andre Chabot.

While Sunday may have marked the 81st year the Academy Awards honoured the best of the best in movie-making, Saturday marked the first time Calgary handed out its own Oscar Awards in front of a sold-out crowd in what was deemed a smashing success.

Although the goal of the glamourous night at the Big Four Building was to raise funds for the Green Learning Foundation, the real intent was to recognize the very best services, businesses, recreation facilities, entertainment venues and more that Calgary has to offer.

Calgary FM's fabulous Phoenix gave Hugh Jackman a run for his money as host of the evening, while the red carpet swarmed with dapper suits and slinky dresses and a musical act from Savannah-Rose and comedy from Robert Larrabee made for a well-rounded night of knock-off Academy Awards entertainment.

There were plenty of upsets that came along with the handing out of the statues, namely the Cactus Club Cafe being named as Best Dining Experience, Crave Cupcakes in Kensington named as Best Retail Outlet, the Sheraton Eau Claire taking top Hotel/Inn honours and Lululemon Southcentre being named the most Environmentally Friendly business.

As with the Hollywood version there were also a few slam dunks.

Calgary's 'Slumdog,' so to speak, was none other than the pride and joy of the prairies – WestJet airlines. Taking home the highest tally of the night with four Cowtown Oscar wins for Best Customer Service, Best Innovation/E-Business, Best Employer as well as the 'Heart of the New West Award,' it seems the voting public definitely approves of the homegrown airline.
